Ahead of Veterans Day, Indian Lake Elementary students are learning how to take care of “Old Glory.”
Members of the American Legion Auxiliary in Huntsville spoke to several grade levels about the meaning of the stars and stripes that make up the American flag and flag etiquette.
Member Nikki Trout says it’s important that our young people understand the proper treatment of the flag. They also learned about the Ohio flag and how it differs in size, shape and meaning from the American flag.
Trout demonstrated ways we can honor our flag including: never letting the flag touch the ground, raising it quickly and without stopping to the top of a flag pole, lighting the flag with a spotlight if you leave it flying in the dark and taking the flag down in a rainstorm if it is not made of weatherproof material.
ILES students also studied the lyrics and history of the National Anthem in music class this fall.
