Third grade students are bringing math to breakfast!
They recently studied fractions by making flapjacks from scratch!
Students used kitchen utensils to measure out ingredients including:
1 1/2 cups of flour
1/3 cup of sugar
3 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder and
1/2 teaspoon of salt
After stirring they added:
1 1/4 cups of milk
1 egg and
3 tablespoons of oil
Then they mixed it all together and teachers helped make the pancakes on a griddle for the students to enjoy. During the feast they answered questions about how to convert the fractions to different measurements and how to manage if a recipe calls for 3/4 of a cup when they only have a 1/4 cup or a 1 cup measuring cup.
Teachers say this exercise is a fun and practical way to help students understand fractions.
