Spring is finally here and ILES third graders tested the theory that you can balance an egg on its end during the vernal equinox! This year the science students finally got the egg to stand toward the end of the day, after struggling earlier. They watched a video and learned about the equinox.

This bit of egg folklore became popular in 1945 after LIFE magazine published an article about the balancing act in ancient China. However, today scientists say you have the same chances of getting an egg to stand on its end as any other day of the year.
Not up for debate is the meaning of the word “equinox.” It means “equal night,” which is why it occurs two times per year when the day and night are of equal lengths, each 12 hours.
