Elementary Election Day UPDATE!
Elementary Election Day UPDATE!
Elementary Election Day UPDATE!
Posted on 11/02/2020
The ballots have all been counted!
6 invalid votes: (Voted for both Duck and Farmer Brown)
Farmer Brown: 30
Duck: 46
The winner and new president is DUCK!!
Like many of us, Indian Lake Elementary School kindergarten students are excited about casting their ballot. Although they are too young to vote in the Presidential election, teacher Paula Fout says the students are old enough to begin to understand the election process.
Just before Election Day, teachers read to students a book called “Duck for President” by author Doreen Cronin. The students then read a Scholastic News edition about elections and watched a candidate video. Then they had to decide which candidate from the book, Farmer Brown or Duck, they felt would make the best president. After that they filled out a simple voter registration form and finally entered the voting booth to cast their ballot in secret. After that, they sported large “I Voted!” buttons. We are still awaiting the results of this election!
The entire exercise was a lesson in civics, along with literacy, and other kindergarten skills such as name writing, creativity and decision making.
