A new piece of art made of old materials will catch your eye as you enter ILES.
Art teacher Terry Nelson recently installed a colorful mobile made of egg cartons in the lobby just outside the cafeteria.
Nelson explains that early in the year she found herself with a large amount of used egg cartons. As a person who is environmentally conscious and committed to recycling, she found a unique use for the discarded packaging.
At the end of the 2018-19 school year, she had then third graders cut the cartons apart, color the shapes and string them them together. Nelson completed the mobile over the summer by covering a hula hoop and connecting the sections.  Now this year's fourth graders can see their completed collaboration and everyone can enjoy the recycled artwork.
As an added bonus, Nelson says she gets to teach about advanced art vocabulary involved in this project with the words installation (a piece of artwork that is installed for permanent or semi-permanent display) and mobile (a sculpture that hangs and moves and can be enjoyed from all sides.)
